TERA news » Update on Recent Technical Issues
Since Friday, August 21, we have been aware of issues impacting some TERA players—including low FPS, game stuttering, and frequent client crashes.
We have been investigating the issue throughout the weekend with the game’s developer and we have the following updates to share:
- As numerous players have already identified, the issue stems from conflicts between TERA.exe and Windows Defender, and in some cases Microsoft Security Essentials and other anti-virus programs.
- A recent Windows Defender update changed the way that the program interacts with the TERA client, causing systems to increase in CPU and disk usage while running TERA. This is what is causing the recent stuttering and FPS drops for some players.
- This issue is impacting other TERA publishers as well and is not unique to the version published by En Masse Entertainment.
We will be deploying a fix during our next maintenance that will hopefully address the issue.
However, if you would like to try to correct the problem for yourself and resume playing TERA immediately, you can try the following steps to add your TERA install directory to the exclusions in Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials:
- Go to "Settings" in either program. (You may need to do this in both programs.)
- Click "Excluded files and locations" from the left-side menu.
- Click "Browse."
- Navigate to the directory where TERA is installed on your computer and click "OK."
- Click "Save Changes."
- Try launching TERA to see if your issues are resolved.
Thank you for your patience while we continue to investigate this issue and work to resolve it. We apologize if it has impacted your ability to play TERA this past weekend.
