Starcraft 2 news » Arcade Highlight: Angry Angry Templar

We’re now featuring Angry Angry Templar-, an arena game by Aphotic, in the StarCraft II Arcade. Angry Angry Templar is based on a Warcraft III game by TheZizz called Hungry Hungry Felhound. In this version, a deadly AI-controlled Templar chases whichever player is currently holding the Orb. Passing the orb to another player gets you out of danger. Keep moving and hand off the orb to avoid death-By-Templar. Players can also select from a couple special abilities that might save their lives in a desperate moment. The last player left alive wins the round.

We recently had the chance to speak with game creator Drake, aka “Aphotic”, and he answered a few questions for us:

Q:How did you get started designing games?

A: StarCraft is where I started originally, but I didn't really get into it until Warcraft III.

Q: How many people worked on this game and what roles did they have?

A: I did everything, except for the art. An artist named CptKirk.767 did all of the art.

Q: What got you started on this particular game?

A: My clan (Clan TTG) had a contest for the best map made in a single day. Angry Angry Templar was made, packaged, and published all in one day. Later on, I went back and fine-tuned it.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in using the StarCraft II editor to make their own game? Where is a good place for them to start the learning process?

A: Go to Sc2mapster! There you'll find hundreds of tutorials, from beginner tutorials that show you how to create a unit, to tutorials that allows you to change the layout of your game via XML. New developers are often intimidated by the data editor; it really just takes time to get used to. Don't give up on it.

Q: Are there any changes or additions coming to “Angry Angry Templar” that the community can look forward to?

A: I’m considering adding ranks and skins to the game. Right now, Angry Angry Templar is kind of low priority. I have been developing another game that I’m calling Raid for some time now, and I hope for it to be the most difficult team game you've ever played in your entire life.

Being a game developer is my dream. I love being able to take my ideas, put them on paper, and then set them into motion. The StarCraft II Editor and other game designing tools are my canvas. I have been really interested in working for Blizzard Entertainment one day; I have always loved the passion Blizzard puts into their games.

Thanks, Drake!

Drake frequently works with a game development group called Team Syntax. You can read more about Angry Angry Templar and other projects by their group at the website: http://TeamSyntax.com.
